The Black Lip Oyster is primarily found in the waters around the Cook and Tahitian Island atolls in the south Pacific ocean. The mother-of-pearl from this shell is prized for it's lustre and durability, and is used in high-end fashion and interior design - most often as pearl buttons and tiles. This oyster also produces a black pearl (often a more blue or purple colour) that is rated as the highest quality pearl of any pearl-forming mollusc.
